EBU normalization performs two passes and normalizes according to EBU R128.
Understanding Audio Normalization¶
At HeapStream, we define audio normalization specifically as loudness normalization. This process adjusts a recording based on its perceived loudness.
LUFS
, standing for Loudness Units relative to Full Scale, measure the loudness throughout an entire audio stream. They are the standard metric in our normalization process. The primary aim of normalization is to adjust the gain to align the average loudness to a predetermined standard, or "norm."
When to use Audio Normalization¶
Audio normalization's primary purpose is to equalize the perceived loudness across your media assets. Its application depends on the specific content. Normalization is usually advantageous when the audio gain is standard and the audio quality is high. However, like any video and audio processing, it will alter the audio in some way. Therefore, decide wisely whether to utilize this feature.
Activating Audio Normalization¶
Currently, Audio normalization can only be enabled when uploading a video.
Enable Normalize Audio
checkbox in the Video Upload
page under the "Advanced Options" section.
Set normalize_audio
field to true
(default false
) when uploading ⧉ or fetching ⧉ a video.
Target Loudness¶
Our standard loudness level for audio normalization in our video stack is -23 LUFS
.
